Basílica da Estrela

Located in Estrela Square it is considered by many one of Lisbon’s most important monuments of the eighteen’s century.

Built between 1779 and 1785, due to a promise made by Queen D. Maria I, the Basílica da Estrela has a unique construction combining religious, baroque and neoclassic architecture.

The feminine monastery of the Ordem das Carmelitas Descalças has a rectangular design and the basilica church is considered one the most brilliant accomplishments of late baroque with neo-classic elements.

Besides being built by Queen D. Maria I, it became the Queen’s pantheon, making her the only monarch of the Bragança dynasty (besides D. Pedro who is buried in Brazil) not buried in the São Vicente de Fora Monastery.
