Museu do Fado
The museum that celebrates the exceptional value of Fado as a symbol of Lisbon.
Since its opening to the public in 1998, the Museum has benefited from the bounty of hundreds of interpreters, authors, composers, musicians, instrument makers, scholars and researchers, professional and amateur artists all converging towards it, in short, hundreds of personalities who witnessed and constructed the history of Fado and who did not hesitate to entrust to us the testimonies of their emotional heritage and memories towards the achievement of a common objective.
To all of them, the Fado Museum pays tribute, investigating, preserving and promoting the unique qualities of this performative art which originated in the historical districts of Lisbon and that throughout its approximately 200 year history has been able to absorb cultural influences and varied techniques, plotting a blessed path through widely differing areas which have lasted throughout almost the whole of the twentieth century, in exact proportion to its celebration in popular culture.
